The weightlifting competition at the Islamic Solidarity Games will undoubtedly draw a lot of interest across the five days of competition. There are two types of of lifts - the Snatch, which requires speed, balance, and flexibility; and the Clean and Jerk, which demands more power. Modern weightlifting, participants compete in both Snatch and Clean and Jerk, and are placed according to their total combined result.
In weightlifting male and female athletes competes in 8 different weight classes. There are 48, 53, 58, 63, 69, 75, 90 and +90 kg classes for women and 56, 62, 69, 77, 85, 94, 105 and +105 kg for men. The number of weight classes for Baku 2017 weightlifting events were defined from 1 January, 2017.
There will be 8 weight classes for men’s events and 7 for women’s events. Weightlifting competition will be held at The Weightlifting Arena which is located in the Shuvelan District of Baku.
Weightlifting was included to the program of the first Olympic Games of 1896. In modern weightlifting lifters compete in both the snatch and clean and jerk. Prizes are usually given for the heaviest weights lifted in each and in the overall—the maximum lifts of both combined.
