Handball

Sarhadchi Arena will host the handball competitions which will be held over six days. Handball is a team sport in which two teams of seven players each pass a ball using their hands with the aim of throwing it into the goal of the other team. Athletes will compete for the gold medal in the men's and women's tournaments. Handball is played on a 40m long and 20m wide court. The goals at either end of the court are 3m wide and 2m high.

The court is divided into two halves, with each goal surrounded by two 'D' shaped areas. The inner 'D', at a distance of six metres from the goal, is defined by its dark blue colour and is called the goal area, which only the goalkeeper may enter; the outer 'D', defined by a dotted line at a distance of nine metres from the goal, marks the free-throw line.

  • Unlike other sports, handball players are not restricted with number of faults
  • The size of the ball differs in men's and women's handball
  • For children, the ball is even smaller and usually softer to avoid injuries
