There will be five days of competition at the Baku Shooting Centre which is a world class shooting facility. Medal hopefuls will have opportunity to compete across a number of individual and team events including pistol, rifle and shotgun firearms. Each discipline consists of multiple events, varying from the target, position, and type of sport gun. Shooting has a rich history dating back to the formation of its first sport clubs in the 13th century.

The sport evolved following the development of arms and munition manufacturing, and eventually became more regimented thanks to the founding of governing bodies and shooting associations. Shooting was first included in the Olympics in 1896 and has appeared at every Games since other than the St. Louis 1904 and Amsterdam 1928 Games. Electronic targets were introduced at the Barcelona 1992 Games as a way to improve accuracy.

Facts and figures:

  • Men's shooting was part of the first modern Olympic Games, in Athens in 1896, but women's events were not included until the Los Angeles 1984 Games
  • The Shooting World Cup Final for Rifle, Pistol and Shotgun was held in Gabala, Azerbaijan in October 2014
