Baku 2017 Media Statement

10 May 2017

Participation of Sudan, Libya and Kuwaiti athletes at the Baku 2017 Islamic Solidarity Games

The Azerbaijan Islamic Solidarity Games Operations Committee (AISGOC) and the Islamic Solidarity Sports Federation (ISSF) can confirm they have received confirmation from the Libyan and Sudanese National Olympic Committees (NOC) that both NOCs have withdrawn from the 4th Islamic Solidarity Games. They can also confirm that the Kuwaiti athletes, who were due to compete as Independent ISSF athletes, will no longer travel to Baku and will not participate in the Games.

Both AISGOC and the ISSF would like to acknowledge the efforts made by both the Libyan and Sudanese NOCs to participate at these Games and would like to place on record their gratitude for the support both NOCs have given to the development of the Islamic Solidarity Games and the values it seeks to promote.

Despite our collective efforts to provide the athletes from Kuwait with an opportunity to take part in the Games, the ISSF and AISGOC accept that ultimately this was not possible and would like to thank all parties for the work they did to support this initiative.

Any further enquiries relating to this statement, should be directed to the relevant National Olympic Committees.
