Bahrain targets three sports at Games

6 May 2017

Bahraini athletes will compete in three out of the 20 sports included in the programme for next month's fourth edition of the Islamic Solidarity Games in Baku, officials said.

The sports with Bahraini participation will be athletics, shooting and wrestling.

Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC) general secretary Abdulrahman Askar said that participation at the Baku games would present the country's athletes with a strong opportunity to compete with the region's best athletes and achieve progress in their respective sports.

"Our participation at the Baku games comes as per the approval from the Bahrain Olympic Committee board and in line with its 2017 calendar international competition programme, and the Solidarity Games is one of those important stops in our pursuit to win as many medals as possible," Askar told the Bahrain News agency.

Bahrain finished 11th in the medals table at the last Islamic Solidarity Games, held four years ago in Palembang, Indonesia with two golds, one silver and four bronzes.

The Solidarity Games will run from May 12-22 in Baku with around 3,500 athletes from all 57 member countries of the Islamic Solidarity Sports Federation taking part.
