Avramova looking to build on Baku success in Budapest

Swimming is one of two sports that will be making a splash at the Baku Aquatics Centre. Male and female athletes will be competing for gold across the 40 events on offer. The intense battles between swimmers always makes Swimming an incredibly exciting sport to watch. While swimming dates back many centuries, competitive swimming did not become popular until the 1800s.

At the first few modern Olympic Games, swimming events were held in open water until the London Games in 1908, when Olympic swimming competitions moved to the pool. An extremely demanding sport, swimming requires athletes to race through the water and touch the finish line ahead of their competitor, a split second can mean the difference between a gold medal and last place.

Facts and figures:

  • Swimmers in the backstroke, freestyle and butterfly events are only allowed to swim a maximum of 15 metres under water after both the start and turns to prevent any unfair advantage
