Iran and Azerbaijan share spoils on final day

Over four days, the diving competition will include the 3m springboard, 10m platform, synchronised 3m springboard and the synchronised 10m platform and they will compete for overall 8 medals. Diving has gained an incredible following in recent years with athletes pushing themselves to the limit to showcase their acrobatic prowess as they fly through the air.

It is thought that diving, as we know it today, was first used by German and Swedish gymnasts who used the water as a soft landing to allow for gymnastic moves mid-air. Diving made its Olympic debut at the St. Louis 1904 Olympic Games, where the 10m platform and the plunge for distance were featured as medal events. Synchronised diving made its first Olympic appearance at Sydney in 2000.

Facts and figures:

  • When diving from the 10 metre platform, a diver will enter the water at 50-55 km per hour
  • Women's diving was included in the Olympic Games for the first time in 1912
  • It was then a simple diving contest from the high board
  • A perfect entry into the water without a splash is known as a rip, due to the sound a diver makes is said to be similar to paper ripping
